March Meeting

For our March meeting, Ezra Parker will be talking about building applications using jQuery UI and the jqGrid plugin, which is a session that will be presented at cf.Objective() in April. Here's the description:

Building RIAs with jQuery UI & jqGrid

Ever since the introduction of jQuery and other JavaScript/Ajax libraries, you don't need to know Flex in order to construct complex, fully-featured and user-friendly Rich Internet Applications. If you're already familiar with jQuery and want to take your RIA development to the next level, this session will demonstrate the use of the jQuery user interface library widgets and the jqGrid plugin to create an advanced single-page application with a consistent look and feel that can be easily re-skinned using an existing jQuery UI theme or by using ThemeRoller to craft a custom design.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

We're going to push our meeting back one week, to Thursday, March 18th (at the regular time and place -- please see the meetings page for further details).

First Meeting of the Year

Hi everybody, I hope that your start of the year has been great!  Lots to do and little time to do it in, right?  Anyways, next week is our first meeting of the year and I hope to see you there. We will have our friend O?uz Demirkapi present on GeoLocation and ColdFusion.  It should be an incredible topic!

We also have some giveaways to start the new year and also we need to pick a list of books we would like to be donated to the CFUG for our raffles.  So get ready as we start on a brand new and great year!!

IECFUG meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the second Thursday of every month at Cal Poly Pomona 98C 5-17 (campus map)

See the Meetings page for more details.

December Meeting: Holiday Party!

Hi everyone -- 2009 is almost gone, and we're planning to wrap up the year with a bang! Instead of holding our regular meeting at Cal Poly next week, we're planning to have a networking event/holiday party at a local pizzeria.

This shindig is scheduled for 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 19th at Pizza 'N Such in Claremont, which is located on the northeast corner of 2nd Street and Yale Avenue.

In order to encourage folks to mingle, we've reserved their back room, which seats about 15-20 people, so we'll have a semi-private area to ourselves (with overflow into their main dining area if necessary).

We're also giving away some great prizes to close out the year, including an Adobe software license (which can be used for a copy of ColdFusion 9!), and a set of the one-day ColdBox training materials (generously donated by Luis).

Please reply to the thread on our Google group if you're planning to come so we can get a sense of how many people to expect. Also, if anyone wishes to bring a friend/spouse/significant other please feel free, just add them to the head count.

Hopefully folks who aren't able to make it to meetings during the week will be able to come out for this event -- we'd love to meet some new people!

November Meeting

We will be holding our next meeting this Thursday, November 12th at the regular time (6:15 pm for those who are interested in networking, with the main session starting at 7:00) and place (room 5-16 of the C/L/A building at Cal Poly Pomona). Please see our meetings page for more details and directions.

Instead of an "eyes-front" presentation, we've decided to try something a little bit different this month: we're going to have a "mini code jam" focusing on the use of the jQuery UI user interface library. The idea here is to first have a brief introduction to the technology, after which we will encourage everyone who wishes to participate to write a small demo (whatever can be done in about an hour of coding), which they will then share with the group.

Anyone who doesn't have any experience with jQuery itself (the core library, not the UI widgets) may wish to familiarize themselves with the basics beforehand -- this presentation from Ben Nadel is an excellent introduction to jQuery.

We'll also have at least one person providing assistance for those who might need a bit of extra help. We'd love to have as much active participation as possible, as this will provide the best learning experience for everyone involved.

Finally, as this session will not necessarily require ColdFusion, we should be able to make use of the lab's computers, so a laptop is not a requirement.

As usual, we will need to submit a request for parking permits by the end of the day today, so please respond to the meeting thread on our Google group to confirm that you wish to attend.

We hope to see you all there!
